For our use, removal of 2.x would the the ideal. I'm not aware of any reason to keep 2.x around.
Working on this now. I've noticed that installing 3.x over 2.x keeps both versions installed. Is it typical to want to keep both versions? I imagine 2.x is no longer receiving updates, but want to be sure we should allow the upgrade between major versions. If we allow the upgrade, we will include a script to remove the old version when installing the latest.
This application would be a big win for our environment as well.
