Autodesk Desktop Connector

Autodesk Desktop Connector is constantly being update on a monthly bases.   Is it possible to have this added to 3rd Party Updates, it uses an exe build

This would be rather handy to have in the PMPC catalog. It tries to auto update and our users dont have elevated rights to perform the update.

Dan, we managed this internally by wrapping the Desktop Connector installer inside a PSADT script where we able to use 7z to extract the EXE from Autodesk into Files and then the subsequent archive (Autodesk_Desktop_Connector_002_002.7z) that is inside the archive into Files.

Once we expanded both archives into Files we were able to execute setup.exe -i install --offlinemode -q.

PMPC recommends creating a custom app, which we've attempted without success so far. Has anyone been able to successfully create and deploy a custom app in the meantime? We're currently trying that approach but running into some issues.

The -q switch does indeed install silently now, however there are still challenges with this app:

    - It extracts 1.6GB of installation media to C:\Autodesk and does not clean up after itself.

    - DesktopConnector-x64.exe exits after it has extracted and run the contained Setup.exe installer, so we would need to wait for child processes to complete before exiting to avoid a failure from the detection script.

We are currently building support for .zip archives, if self-extracting 7z/Zip exes could be handled in the same way, that may be the best solution for this particular product.

I would also like request that Desktop Connector be added. We currently deploy this via sccm using the -q switch so it should be possible. Autodesk is putting more emphasis on updating this software since it works in conjunction with Autodesk Construction Cloud (their cloud storage solution). Also if it gives you any more motivation, AutoMox says that they support auto-updating it!

I, too, would like to request that this be looked at again. While the installer still needs to be extracted, it can be done with the /q switch. So if automation is what PMPC is looking for, it can now be automated. Running the source file with that switch extracts the installer folder to C:\Autodesk\WI\Autodesk_Desktop_Connector_002_002\image, where the installer source could be grabbed for packaging the update. They also provide an example deployment script that can be used to craft the end product.

Can this be reviewed again? It looks like you can install using just the downloaded EXE with -q as the install switch.

Has there been any update on whether this application can now be supported?

Just a quick update on this app. We used to be able to silently install the Autodesk Desktop Connector. Since version 14.9.0.1430 in April 2021, the download now requires extraction. Because of this reason we are still unable to support it in our catalog.

May make sense to relook at this, the New Autodesk Installer app is getting bundled with all new Autodesk Software, pretty easy overall to use and it is of course getting updated as well at times, bundling that separate as well would be a good idea

Unfortunately we are unable to support this product anymore. Autodesk changed the format of their installer which has made it incompatible with our product at this time.

Please consider this! Many Autodesk apps require the Desktop Connector and they release updates to the Desktop Connector about once a month.

Adding update support for Autodesk Desktop Connector

Merged
Every 2 or 3 months there is a new version for Autodesk desktop connector. It would be far easier to update this, then always create a new SCCM package and deploy it to everyone.
