Home Updater: Retain Installation Path During Upgrade of Home Updater Itself

https://forum.patchmypc.com/index.php?msg=21623

Request to improve the MSI installer for Patch My PC Home Updater to retain the existing installation path during upgrades, rather than resetting or defaulting to the standard install directory (C:\Program Files\Patch My PC\Home Updater) if the user had originally installed to a custom path.

Background

Several users have reported that when manually installing a new version of Home Updater:

  • Even if they had previously installed the app to a custom directory,

  • The installer places the new version into the default path instead.

  • This causes confusion, multiple installations, unexpected desktop icons, and unexpected reactivation of the Scheduled Task for self-updates in the wrong location.

This issue was highlighted by a user named makemyday in the Patch My PC Home Updater Forum (March–April 2025).

Requested Change

  • During upgrade installs, the MSI installer should detect and retain the original installation path automatically.

  • If the installer cannot detect an existing path (e.g., if manually removed), it can default to the standard directory.

Benefits

  • Improves user trust by respecting user choices for where software is installed.

  • Reduces confusion around duplicate installations across multiple directories.

  • Prevents unexpected behavior from Scheduled Tasks linked to specific paths.

  • Aligns with user expectations for typical Windows software upgrade behavior.
