Apply a different naming convention to retained Intune apps/updates

I utilize the option to retain previously created applications/updates for Intune products. What I'd like to do is have a one naming convention for the current version of the app/update and another naming convention for the retained apps/updates (similar to how it already works for ConfigMgr applications). This is because I find the default naming convention to be too cluttered.

I'll use Google Chrome for this example. When a user is looking for Chrome to install from the Company Portal, I would like for them to simply look for the app named "Google Chrome (x64)" or something similar. Including the version in the name by default is redundant as there is already a separate version field for Intune apps. Multiply this for every app they have available to install from Company Portal and it just becomes messy. It's too much information for your average user who is just looking to install Chrome.

However, I wouldn't want retained apps for previous versions to have the same display name as the current one. This is where I feel having a separate naming convention for retained apps would be useful. For retained apps, it would make sense to have the version in the name so you (both admins in Intune and users in Company Portal) can clearly distinguish the retained app from the current release.

For example:

Intune Applications:

  • Current release: "Google Chrome (x64)"

  • Retained version: "Google Chrome (x64) 148.0.7778.179"

Intune Updates:

  • Current release: "Update for Google Chrome (x64)"

  • Retained version: "Update for Google Chrome (x64) 148.0.7778.179"

Thanks everybody, we believe we understand the need and the requirements, and the team has agreed on an approach. We have a few other features currently under active development, and will address this inline with it's popularity (Vote Counts).
