Customizable Naming Convention for Intune Applications

Add the ability to have a customised naming convention for applications when they are created in Intune. This would allow for the naming convention across all Intune applications to be standardised when a naming convention is already in place. For example, the ability to add brackets around the version number in the application name.

UPDATE for extra clarification:

Hi Justin,

The main feature I am after at this point in time is the ability to put brackets around the version number. Perhaps a checkbox for this and another option or text field to choose which type of brackets or character.

Otherwise, an option could be to create a text field for the entire name that accepts both variables for the name and version and other text in between, For Example: {Publisher} {Application Name} ({Version}) would work out to be "Citrix Workspace (20.9.6.34)" or 7-Zip would be "Igor Pavlov 7-Zip (19.00)".

What happens if you statically name the app something like "Chrome (x64)" or "%ProductName% and an update occurs ?

Does it overwrite the existing Intune application with that same name, does it rename the previous one with that same name, does it name it the same making it hard to visually see in the Intune portal (dont think InTune supports this) or does it error out?

Thinking about the scenario where you want certain apps published to the Company Portal but you want friendly names while also keeping the packages updated...

For us it would already help to remove the version numbers, as we're mainly going to use this to make apps available in the company portal app. And for an and user the version numbers can only cause confusion.

pre/post-fixes I would guess would be the simple/easy solution.

Though I do like the idea of PMPC variables for metadata as mentioned in the 10/6 comment. This would allow a ton of flexibility, potentially used in multiple areas.

I assume the downsides would be customers could get themselves in trouble using too generic, duplicate object names etc etc.

A custom prefix would help identify Intune Apps created by the service and will give organisations a chance to apply their own naming convention, i.e. "PatchMyPC App name" or "Publisher - App name some other tag.

It's good the updates are already identifiable, i.e. Update for Google Chrome 85.0.4183.102 (x64)

Can you define the specific options you would like?

Some things like Pre-text text before the title could be easier than other things like your request of brackets around the version. The brackets would likely need to be a checkbox where a prefix/suffix text could be an input box you type in.
