Problem Description
Currently, when an application is deployed as Available via Microsoft Intune (Company Portal) using Patch My PC, the app will not receive automatic updates unless an additional Required or Update-Only assignment is configured.
This creates confusion and additional configuration effort, especially for admins migrating from Scappman, where applications installed via Company Portal were automatically kept up to date without requiring a separate mandatory assignment.
Admins often want to:
Allow users to self-install apps via Company Portal (Available)
Still ensure those apps are automatically patched once installed
Avoid forcing the app installation on devices where the user never installed it
At the moment, this requires complex assignment models (Available + Required, dynamic groups, update-only assignments), which is not intuitive for many customers.
Proposed Feature / Idea
Introduce an optional setting or deployment mode that allows applications installed as Available to automatically receive updates once they are installed.
Example options:
A toggle like: “Automatically update this app after user installation”
An “Evergreen Available App” mode that:
Does not force installation
Automatically patches the app if it exists
A Scappman-like behavior where Patch My PC tracks installed apps and enforces updates without requiring a Required assignment
Benefits
Simplifies update management for Company Portal apps
Reduces the need for multiple assignments and dynamic groups
Improves migration experience from Scappman
Makes Patch My PC behavior more intuitive for Intune admins
Maintains user choice while ensuring security and compliance
Use Case Example
App is deployed as Available
User installs app via Company Portal
New version is released
Patch My PC automatically updates the app on that device
No forced installation on devices where the app was never installed
Additional Notes
This feature would be optional and disabled by default to avoid changing existing behavior.
Admins who prefer strict Required-based patching can continue using the current model.
